Disney Leans Into Going Green at Florida Parks With a New Eco-Friendly Addition
Disney just debuted new solar-powered trash and recycling bins at EPCOT, and while a trash can announcement might not sound like headline news, the details behind these specific bins make them worth knowing about.
The new bins have appeared around the World Showcase entrance area at EPCOT, spotted near Port of Entry, Disney Traders, Joffrey’s Coffee and Tea, the Odyssey Pavilion, and in the Mexico Pavilion. They are brown with black panels labeled ‘trash’ or ‘recycle,’ each with a corresponding icon. The World Showcase medallions are properly installed on the bins, a detail that matters to the Disney community, which noticed when those medallions were replaced with stickers on some World Showcase bins last fall.

How They Actually Work
The bins operate via a foot pedal at the bottom, which guests press to open the panel and deposit trash or recycling. The hands-free design makes them more hygienic than standard bins that require touching a handle or lid. The opening behind the panel is smaller than a standard theme park trash can, which created a small learning curve for some guests during the initial debut as people worked out the pedal-and-panel mechanism.
The solar panels built into the tops of the bins power an internal trash compactor. That compactor allows significantly more material to fit inside before the bin needs to be emptied, which is a meaningful operational improvement at a park that generates substantial trash volumes during its seasonal food festivals. The bins also use smart technology to signal the custodial team when they reach capacity rather than requiring cast members to manually check each bin on a schedule.
The black handle on the side is for cast member use when emptying the bin.

This Is Not New to Disney
Disney tested similar solar-powered smart bins at EPCOT starting in late 2024, with the Germany Pavilion serving as the primary pilot location. By May 2025, roughly ten of the bins had been deployed throughout the Germany Pavilion’s main walkway and seating areas. Cast members involved in the pilot confirmed the smart signaling functionality during that test phase, and the Germany rollout was framed as a precursor to potential parkwide expansion.

The June 2026 debut across multiple World Showcase entrance locations represents the next step in that expansion, with the addition of proper World Showcase medallions on the new units suggesting Disney is treating this as a permanent installation rather than another extended test.
Why This Matters for Disney
EPCOT’s festival calendar creates sustained periods of elevated trash generation as guests move through the food booth circuit and dispose of plates, cups, and packaging from dozens of kiosks throughout the day. A bin that compacts its contents and signals cast members only when it is actually full is a more efficient piece of park infrastructure during those high-traffic periods than a standard bin that fills up quickly and requires frequent manual rounds to maintain.
Solar powered. Smart signaling. Hygienic foot pedal. World Showcase medallions. Small upgrade, genuine improvement.
