Tom Holland Reveals When He’s Leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Tom Holland already knows what he wants his Marvel goodbye to look like.
After nearly a decade as Spider-Man, Holland has started discussing how he sees his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe eventually coming to an end. The actor isn’t putting a date on his departure, but he does have a clear vision for how it should happen.

That conversation arrives as Spider-Man prepares for another major chapter on the big screen. This summer’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day will pick up four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), which left Peter Parker completely alone after Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) erased him from everyone’s memory.
The film is expected to reset the character in many ways. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has described it as a more “classic” take on Spider-Man, with a greater focus on Peter Parker’s life at street level.
For Holland, however, thoughts about the future now extend beyond the next movie.

The actor first joined the MCU in Captain America: Civil War (2016), becoming the franchise’s third live-action Spider-Man. Unlike previous versions of the character, Holland’s Peter Parker was woven directly into Marvel’s wider universe from the beginning.
His relationship with Tony Stark became one of the defining dynamics of the Infinity Saga. Peter’s death in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) helped drive Stark’s actions in Avengers: Endgame (2019), where he ultimately sacrificed himself to save the universe.
Across six MCU appearances, Holland’s Spider-Man grew from an inexperienced teenager into a hero capable of making impossible choices.
Tom Holland Wants To Pass the Torch Before He Leaves
Speaking to Empire, Holland revealed that he hopes to help introduce the next generation of Spider-Man characters before stepping away from the role himself.

“For whoeverās next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter,” he said.
“Whatever that looks like, I donāt know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”
The comments offer the clearest indication yet of how Holland views his eventual exit from Marvel.
Rather than simply disappearing from the franchise, the actor appears interested in helping launch a successor, much like Robert Downey Jr. helped introduce Spider-Man to the MCU a decade ago.
Marvel has yet to announce plans for a live-action Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, or Spider-Woman project connected to Holland’s films. Even so, fans have spent years speculating about when those characters might make their MCU debuts.

Spider-Man’s Future Looks Bigger Than Ever
If anything, Holland’s remarks suggest his departure is still some way off.
Introducing a new Spider-character would likely require several more appearances before any handover could take place. With Brand New Day positioned as a fresh start for Peter Parker, Marvel appears to be building toward a longer future for the character rather than a final chapter.
That stands in stark contrast to the uncertainty that surrounded Spider-Man’s future in 2019.
At the time, negotiations between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures temporarily collapsed, leading many fans to believe Holland’s Spider-Man could leave the MCU altogether. The two studios eventually reached a new agreement, allowing the partnership to continue.

The decision proved hugely successful. Spider-Man: No Way Home earned more than $1.9 billion worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing films in Marvel history and reaffirming Spider-Man’s position as one of the company’s most valuable characters.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters on July 31, 2026 (although some countries receive the film even earlier). The film stars Holland alongside Zendaya (MJ), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle/Punisher), Michael Mando (Mac Gargan/Scorpion), and Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk).
Stranger Things star Sadie Sink will also make her Marvel debut in an undisclosed role, with fans continuing to speculate about which character she may be playing.
For now, Holland isn’t saying goodbye. When that day eventually comes, though, he hopes it will involve helping someone else take over the web-slinging mantle.
Do you think it’s time for Tom Holland to pass over the torch as Spider-Man?
