‘Home Alone’ Legend Shares Plot Synopsis for New Sequel

Over the years, Macaulay Culkin has reappeared in the public eye with a surprising frequency — always as Kevin from Home Alone, but each time with a different tone. A 2018 commercial for Google Assistant gave fans a grown-up Kevin, still alone in the McCallister house but now relying on smart-home tech instead of wits and booby traps.

Then in 2015, he joined the odd, unofficial web series :DRYVRS — giving Kevin a dark, post-traumatic makeover after his childhood ordeal. “I still have nightmares about this bald weirdo dude chasing me,” the older Kevin admits in the first episode.

Most recently, as the 35th anniversary of the 1990 classic draws near, we’ve seen him return once again — this time for a heartfelt new holiday-season ad campaign for Home Instead care services. In the campaign, titled Home But Not Alone, Kevin isn’t defending a house from burglars — he’s worrying about keeping his aging mother safe at home.

With all that history in mind, it makes sense that when Culkin recently took the stage on his “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” tour, he didn’t rule out revisiting Kevin for real. Per Variety, he said that he “wouldn’t be completely allergic” to a sequel — “the right thing,” as long as the story was meaningful.

He even sketched out a rough pitch: Kevin is now a widower or divorced, raising a child while juggling career demands. The kid — feeling neglected — locks Kevin out and rigs the house with traps. This time, Kevin isn’t defending the house from burglars, but fighting to get back into his son’s heart. As Culkin put it, the house would become a metaphor for their broken relationship.

It’s a clever reversal. The franchise that began with mischief and mayhem — a kid left alone, defending his home from thieves — could become a story about fatherhood, regret, and reconciliation. In some ways, it feels like the emotional arc of every “grown-up kid, reconnecting with family” story.

Culkin’s gradual re-appearances as Kevin over the last decade have softened the idea of a sequel, gradually acclimating fans to a grown-up McCallister. Whether it was a comedic ad, a dark web series, or a tender care-themed campaign, each return reminded people that the character belongs to Culkin — and he’s not opposed to revisiting him.

For now, the sequel remains a concept — an elevator pitch and nothing more. Still, it’s already a lot better than the last four films in the series.
