‘Harry Potter’ Franchise Expanding Aggressively, Another New Attraction Confirmed

The Wizarding World is no stranger to reinvention. With new lands, exhibits, and stage shows cropping up across the globe, J.K. Rowling’s franchise continues to find fresh ways to reach fans. This fall, one of its most atmospheric experiences is moving to Illinois — and it’s bringing the Forbidden Forest with it.

Far from the lights of a soundstage or theme park, this outdoor trail transports guests into the darker corners of the wizarding universe. Set among the trees of YMCA Camp Duncan in Ingleside, the experience blends immersive storytelling with hands-on magic, inviting visitors to walk directly into scenes inspired by Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts.

It opens October 3 and marks the attraction’s first run in the Midwest.

Step Into the Forbidden Forest

Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience has already proved a hit in cities like Austin, Westchester, and Singapore. It’s also currently running in Brisbane. Now, Chicago-area fans will get their chance to explore the nighttime woodland trail, which recreates key moments and creatures from the films using lighting, sound, and large-scale props.

Visitors can cast spells with their wands, interact with glowing forest elements, and encounter familiar magical creatures along the route. “Guests are invited to immerse themselves deeper into a magical realm inspired by Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts,” say organizers, noting that the experience is open Wednesday through Sunday evenings starting at 4:45 p.m.

The attraction has become especially popular in the lead-up to Halloween, when the forest setting takes on an even more enchanting — and eerie — quality. Tickets are limited and early booking is strongly encouraged.

A Growing Footprint for the Franchise

The relocation comes at a time of renewed momentum for the Harry Potter brand. Universal’s Epic Universe park recently debuted its new Ministry of Magic land, anchored by Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. continues to expand its studio tour offerings, with Tokyo’s location now open and another site expected in Shanghai.

Chicago has already seen increased attention from the franchise this year. A dedicated Harry Potter store opened in the city earlier in 2024, offering themed merchandise and small-scale experiences for fans. The Forbidden Forest trail now adds a larger, more immersive layer to the local offerings.

Stage productions like Harry Potter and the Cursed Child are still drawing audiences in London and New York, while touring exhibitions — including Visions of Magic and Harry Potter: The Exhibition — have brought film props and sets to fans across multiple continents.

An HBO reboot of the original book series is also currently in production, ensuring the franchise’s reach extends well into the next decade. Yet even with all these developments, it’s the smaller, site-specific events like this that often create the deepest connection with audiences.

With fall approaching and excitement building, the forest may soon be full of wands, whispers, and wonder — this time, just outside Chicago.
