2. Redesigning a Classic
In 2013, Mickey and his pals received a literal reanimation in their return to cartoon short films. Known to many as Mickey Mouse or Mickey Mouse (2013), the show is essentially new 2-5 minute short films, hand drawn and animated, and returning to simplistic formulas reminiscent of the cartoons of Mickey’s heyday. These new shorts are based on designs by artist, Paul Rudish. Rudish’s art style seems to be a throwback to the 1930’s mixed with the colorful comic book scheme of the 50’s. Along with Mickey, Minnie, and the rest, Goofy also received a restyled look for the shorts. Taking inspiration from his Dippy Dawg look, Goofy has now gone back to sporting a simple vest, hat, and shoes look. His physical appearance also matches that of Rudish’s sketchy, comic book style design, being a lot more gangly and stretched. This redesign has been met with mixed reviews from fans, but it’s easy to see where Rudish took his inspiration.
